Review of the “Sharing Hearts in Nepal” Program (2025)

The Sharing Hearts in Nepal program in 2025 provided participants with the opportunity to deliver free acupuncture treatments in monasteries and refugee camps, as well as to assist in patient care at the Pokhara Eye Hospital. The program was offered by Dr. Shin through the NCCAOM portal (now NCBAHM) and reflects her strong commitment to improving both the physical well-being and broader welfare of underserved communities.

Participating in this program was a deeply meaningful experience. Nepal is a country that continues to face significant challenges, including poverty, the aftermath of earthquakes, and the burden of disease. At the same time, it possesses remarkable cultural richness, resilience, and generosity among its people.

Exposure to a culture that differs greatly from one’s own can be profoundly eye-opening and encourages personal reflection and growth. Despite language and cultural differences, our group was welcomed warmly in the communities we visited. Communication was facilitated by the fact that many individuals spoke English or other languages, allowing for meaningful interaction with patients and local practitioners.

Dr. Shin demonstrated strong leadership throughout the program. She was well organized, attentive, and consistently available to provide guidance and support when needed. The program schedule was intensive and offered substantial clinical exposure, with significant time dedicated to hands-on patient care.

During our time at Pokhara Eye Hospital, I learned about the devastating eye disease known as SHAPU (Seasonal Hyperacute Panuveitis), which can lead to rapid blindness if not recognized and treated promptly. The disease is relatively unique to the region and primarily affects young children who have come into contact with certain species of white moths. Learning about this condition provided valuable insight into regional health challenges and the importance of early detection and treatment.

One important consideration for prospective participants is that, outside of the Pokhara Eye Hospital, sanitation standards in many areas of Nepal may be limited compared with those in more developed healthcare settings. Therefore, participants should approach the experience with flexibility, adaptability, and an open mind.

Overall, the Sharing Hearts in Nepal program offers a valuable opportunity for professional development, cross-cultural learning, and meaningful service. It provides participants with practical clinical experience while contributing to the care of underserved populations.
